Overall Rating |

The Lucid 12″ Mattress consists of 3 layers: a 2″ 4 pound density comfort layer, a 2″ 3 pound middle layer, and an 8″ polyurethane foam base. The top cover is made of bamboo, which is antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites. It can be removed and washed. Featured is open cell technology to allow air to flow freely throughout. The Lucid mattress is backed by a 20 year warranty. Available sizes include twin, twin XL, queen, king, full, and California King. The shipping weight is 99 pounds.
The Good
Affordable. The price for the Cal King is under $500, which is a bargain for a memory foam mattress. The queen and full-size versions are under $400. Tempur-pedic mattresses cost thousands, so the investment here isn’t nearly as sizeable. This takes some of the risk out of buying this mattress, and still has good value even if it only lasts 4-5 years.
Open cell technology. In short, this makes the memory foam more durable and increases air flow. This should help keep the mattress cooler.
Density. The top layer is 4 pounds of memory foam, and the middle layer is 3. This medium density should have a quality feel to it. However, it may not be dense enough for heavier individuals or those seeking pain relief. With that said, medium density is preferred by a lot of people because it’s not too soft or too firm (though some customers thought it was). It really just depends on what you’re needs are.
Short-lived chemical smell. While there are exceptions, most customers claimed that they didn’t notice the smell after a few days past. The smell tends to be worst at higher densities, but this one doesn’t qualify as such. A few did complain that it persisted, but this is the case for just about every memory foam mattress. And, if you put your face into it, then certainly you will notice it.
I have to say that there was definitely an odor. It wasn’t overwhelming, but did smell like a freshly painted room. After about a day it dissipates, and 2 days later it’s almost gone.

Warranty. It’s for 20 years, which is about as good as you can ask for.
The Bad
Thickness/not enough support. With the first two layers, you get 4″ of memory foam. I have been told that 3″ is ideal, and more than this could result in sinking down too much. At least two customers complained about now getting enough support:
I am 163 lbs & 5′ 11″. For my weight itself this mattress is sinking almost 4-5 inches and not supporting. Getting up from this mattress is challenge. I got back pain on the first day itself.

The only thing is that I will have to return it because it’s too soft for me since I have lower back pain, I need a firmer bed.

Not as likely to relieve pain. In most cases, the highest densities are usually best for pain relief. The reason is because they provide the most support by strongly contouring to the body. Therefore, this mattress is not as likely to provide pain relief, since it has a density of 4 pounds on top and 3 in the middle.
Brand confusion. Some memory foam mattresses have several brands attached to them, where one brand is a re-selling a mattress from another. This is one such example. Who do you contact for customer support?
No instructions, warranty card, or contact information. The mattress is not packaged with any of this information.
Made in China. May or may not be a huge deal, but we just don’t know what countries outside the U.S stuff inside these mattresses. The U.S has regulations that are far more strict, so we can feel more confident about mattresses that are manufactured in the States.
Verdict
If your budget is in the $300-$500 range, the Lucid 12″ is one to consider. It has good density, open cell technology, and most said the chemical smell wasn’t an issue. However, it’s not manufactured in the U.S., and no information regarding warranty or customer support is included in the package. Though, at this price point you may not bother anyway.
Bottom line: based on the research I have done, this appears to be a decent mattress for the price. It’s not going to be the most supportive, but the majority of customers are satisfied. As of right now, 87% of customers over at Amazon.com gave it a 4 or 5 star review.
